Question 1
To gain more experience in the use of counselling skills, you have volunteered two hours a week as a listener at a local day care centre. You realise that it would help if you understood more about how to work with people who find speech/speaking difficult.
Briefly explain one step you could take to improve your knowledge in this area.

In many helping relationships it is important to be aware of the risk of creating dependence. An important part of your role is that of encouraging client autonomy.
Briefly explain what ‘autonomy’ means to a client.

Question 3
Alicia is a victim support worker and she has been working with Jack following a burglary at his home. She is concerned as he appears to have lost weight and he looks very pale. It has now been 12 weeks since the burglary and Jack has told her he is not interested in eating. He cannot sleep as he finds he has to keep checking that the windows and doors are all locked.
Identify two steps Alicia could take to begin to explore possibilities for an ethical referral.

During her third visit, Ashlee tells Mary that she has been using cocaine to help her to cope. Mary tells Ashlee that she is going to call her parents to discuss getting her some drug counselling. Ashlee is very angry.
