View Full Version : The psychology of our posting names!

This would be amateur psychology of course!! No science or knowledge involved whatsoever!!

I am fascinated by this because I think from a persons name we can conjure images and make assumptions..we can even perhaps put trust in someone perhaps just based on a good name?

What am I trying to say in choosing Cherrypie? Hot, sweet and delicious? Tempting?? Ha! Is it really who I am or a disguise? Who I wish I was? Or simply what I wish for? A yummy Cherrypie?? Hmmm..

What does my name suggest to you?

Does it affect how you imagine me? Do some names lead us trust someone sooner than other names?

How do I imagine you? Here are just some of your names that come to mind..

Fluffy - small soft and vulnerable, sweet and fluffy!
Jenny - No frills, no hiding, dependable, honest.
Old Wolf - Hmm... Loyal, Older & Wiser

Maybe if you feel brave enough you could say why you chose your posting name and then what the name of the person above or anyone who comes to mind evokes in you.... Does what comes to your mind tally with everyone else or does our interpretation actually tell us more about us!! Are you with me??

Or you could just ignore me and I'll feel really silly!! Would you do that to me??

:goodone:

I guess i am trying to be open, honest, etc. here.. no more hiding :hiding:
cherrypie - tempting, yummy, has layers!
daisychain - pretty, colourful, playful
brighteyes - hopeful, joyful, honest
shrinknightmare - having a bad time with a psych!
wanna be counsellor - dedicated to counselling, interesting, keen
IndieSoul - soulful, not sure whether 'indie' refers to music
Katmandu40 - nepal, knowledgable

That was actually harder than i thought :wiggle:

What a really interesting post.

I tend to focus more on avatars than names, and your name combined with your avatar makes me think of lips covered in cherry lip balm.

Your name as it is makes me think of a deep red, funnily enough (I deal a lot mentally with colours), and that translates to things like being calm, being very deep and also very open as well as warm.

If I look at your name as it is I would still think warm hearted, possibly that you have a front and you have to break through that to get to the core, also maybe that you like to comfort people.

My name comes from me just choosing two random words that sounded good together, but also fitted in with the forum. I deliberately chose a name that is nothing like any of the other names I use on the web.

:nicethread: Interesting!

When choosing the name Daisychain I was trying to think of a happy memory I had from my childhood and making daisy chains in fields during the summer popped into mind lol The name reminds me of how pleasant my childhood was :)

Smilepretty - Young and sweet.

Cherrypie - Tempting, delicious.

Burning the memories - Determined.

My melody - Playful.

To me, your name sounds playful, sweet, and young.

When I was choosing my name, indie immediately came to mind. It's short for "independent", and I thought it fit me well because I try to go my own way and not let others influence my beliefs. Yes, indie is often used to refer to music, but it can describe just about anything. My real name, Megan, makes me think of something completely different. To me it sounds sort of adventurous, and it's not overly feminine.

Very interesting subject, something to think about :)

Hello Indiesoul! Yes I immediately thought young and loves music!:headphones:

I imagine Daisychain is young and blonde and is wearing white!?

I initally feel less attracted to people with numbers in their name.. ??:dunno:

Burning the memories just does evoke for me a picture of someone doing just that...burning photos and letters perhaps over a fire..its a sad picture..

When I saw shrinknightmare I thought it sounded a bit scary..the nightmare bit I suppose.. I didn't know if it meant this person finds them a nightmare or wants to be...or feels they are a nightmare client?

I was thinking about Old Wolf again and I think the old bit made me think that he had experience of life and then I just trusted him more.. which is probably a bit silly. Sorry Old Wolf but you could be mad as a box of frogs for all I know. It also to me kind of evokes a scene of a grey and black wolf standing on a rock overlooking a prarie, looking all erm...proud and erm.. wolfy!! Ha... can't think of the word for a proud wolf!...

Once you have read someones words though I suppose whatever their name that straightaway changes our intital perception..

I am so happy at being called delicious and tempting!! Hehehehehhe This is what the internet was invented for!! It wouldn't happen in real life I can tell you

my two cents, just a try:

- Cherrypie: i am not able to help myself, but your Ava is still present, when i
think of cherrypie... so it is maybe not just the nick:
a cherry could be: sweet or sour... you never know, when you
ate one ; it could always be a surprise. Not easy to find out, of which
taste a cherry is without testing (or get to know you?).
Combination with cake: my first thought was it is always me, who
found a core in her piece of cake^^ Maybe surprising, tricky and
interesting?

- Jenny: Honest, you don't want to hide (at least i think, Jenny is your right
name), for that also strong and brave. Maybe like a resistance... i
don't know if you have seen the film "Camp Rock" (i admitt, i have),
but there are two songs at the end of it... i think they could fit

- Daisychain: Cherrpie gave just a good idea. Maybe also somehow in chains of your system and not able to move?

i choose funk as a shortform, it stands somehow for my zombie-being: as far as i functionate, i don't realise that i am already a corpse.

I really love this topic, but I'm now scared at what you guys think of my user name?????:blue:

Daisy chain reminds me of youth, summer and romance so I think of her as a young sparkling, romantic women.
Cherry pie easy I love food so it would be a sweet smelling person with a hard light crust, covering a warm soft inside.
Indiesoul. Again an independent soulful person.
Fluffy Flowers, cute cuddley, colourfull, bright person.
Jenny. Easy straight to the point. Thats me o0pen and honest person.

Funk.. Its short and to the point.. I did think music to be honest! Like jazzfunk...whatever that is.. I was thinking young person.. wears nice fashionable clothes?? Edgy haircut! Oh I know.. its insane what we assume from a name!

Oh Pinot! Pinot Grigio! How I would love a Pinot right now!! I think of summer bbq's and friends and fun... sociability and laughter.. Tall!? Elegant.. Like a wine bottle?? Ha! Im losing the plot..

Widowmaker... I am so sorry I scared you sweetie.. Don't be scared..its just for fun.. Just an instant image, quite fleeting perhaps so even if the image a name evokes is a little scary it soon fades as we get to know one another... Of course widowmaker is an unusual name...it intrigues me if I am honest.. I don't know what to make of it.. Certainly not light and fluffy... deep and meaningful.. I wasn't scared by it...hmm no... but very intrigued as to why you would pick it..

I suppose its hard not to take the avatar into account that goes with the name.. I suppose the avatar can back it up or confuse the image further.. maybe a scary name is less scary with a softer avatar??

Well thats my 2c or 2p for today!! I needed to think about something outside of myself this afternoon, too much self reflection getting me down and I had forgotten I started this thread!

Thanks for anyone who has humoured me with my odd musings.. sincerely hope not to have offended or scared anybody!!

Well cheery pie I'm glad you a sweet not sour pie. LOL
Widowmaker came from attempting to use part of my name as a login on my e-mail, but it would have with far too many numbers after it. I was getting fed up with having to think of a new one, so I looked around the room. Then remembered I was fiddling with my necklace, do that with out thinking, then it came to me. the dragon on the end of the necklace was called widowmaker.
As there were only 16 of them with that name I used that, and it stuck. hence,

Widowmaker17.
I'm realy a caring person, with a large self esteme problem, worry too much, and build mountains out of mole hills. But when pushed too far then can blow big time.
Hope that answers your question.
