The very first time I saw Spock, I thought he has No emotions. After all, he is from another planet, so I thought that was their characteristic. As I saw more episodes, I found that Spock is half-Vulcan and half-human. And this is what made him such a classic character, the inner conflict between his two selves, logic vs emotions. As a Vulcan, he would want to practice total logic but he also has those emotions. His inner conflict originated from his childhood on planet Vulcan when other Vulcan children brutally persecuted him for being half-human.

That's why I liked the recent Star Trek movie because what was only hinted at in the TV series was actually shown in the movie, that is, the brutal persecution he suffered during his childhood.

That's why, the way I see it, when Spock became an adult, he became even colder than a Vulcan, because he tried to overcompensate for his human half.

His human emotions make it extra difficult to be a Vulcan. And it's that inner-conflict that makes Spock such a classic character.

I wasn't sure if I would be interested in the latest Star Trek movie...I am somewhat a trekkie. But, after reading what you wrote about spock, I may have to see it. Spock has always been my favorite character, I think, because of that inner conflict of his. Sound like the movie would interest me afterall!
