Hi all,
Posted recently about the problems of finding the right therapist, and thought I would give an update on how it all went.
After 'interviewing' several therapists and getting replies to an email shot sent to several more, I finally found THE ONE! He's ticked nearly every box - friendly, accommodating, sympathetic, and sincere - his rooms are comfortable, warm, and welcoming - he listens carefully and responds genuinely to what I say, he is able to set goals and direct the therapy without being overbearing but always checks with me that it's ok, he encourages me to confront and question things he says if I'm not comfortable with it and most importantly of all he really tries to understand what I'm rabbiting on about. Oh and he treats me with respect like an equal adult.
Sounds good huh? I think I am very lucky and feel really grateful that for the first time in my long experience of therapy, therapists, psychiatrists and the like I have found someone who really might be able to help me. Now all I have to do is trust him .... :)
I suppose the moral of the story is to not do what I did all my life. Don't settle for someone whom you instinctively feel isn't saying or doing the right things. I wish I'd followed my instincts much earlier - maybe I wouldn't have been needing therapy now.
