I am currently going through many things in my life and am confused in what type of Counseling is best for me. I am looking for a counselor that I can talk to about myself esteem, self respect, why I have troubles with commitment and lying, and why it is so hard for me to talk to my boyfriend about things. I keep things bottled up for a long period of time and when it finally comes out I tend to act out in a way that cause me and my family many problems. I feel very lost and confused.

So what I am asking is do I need a counselor, Therapist, psychiatrist??? What is the profession I should be searching for in the phone book

Hi and :welcome: to the forum,

Just to say that I'm not a counsellor or anything so may not be the best person to answer your question.. however I hear that things are really difficult and confusing for you.. and you'd like to talk to someone about what's going on for you.

I don't know if you're in the UK but it may be worth starting with a counsellor. With a counsellor it's more about you talking, at your own pace, about how you're feeling, etc. They wouldn't prescribe medication (in the UK anyway).. and appointments are normally weekly for approx 50 minutes. If i read your post correctly, it sounds like this may be beneficial for you?

Having said that within counselling itself there are many different types of counselling, and of course each person is different. So you may need to try a few counsellors before finding one that you feel you could see and trust, etc. Some counsellors offer a free initial consultation so when you contact them you could ask about this. That would give you the chance to speak to them with no commitment..

If you're in the UK there are online sites you can search for counsellors too, such as on the UKCP and BACP websites. There are links in this subforum: http://hopeatsunrise.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=23

Someone else may reply with some more/better thoughts but that's all i can think of for now.. i hope it works out for you :)

Most counsellors now seem to work from a person centred approach in the main but usually use an intergrative style, this means they might use a choice or a mix of styles. it seems a bit confusing at first but if you visit the BACP website and goto the find a counsellor thingy, they will be able to give you a better idea as what might be most suitable for you.:)
