Contracts in Counselling & Psychotherapy (Professional Skills for Counsellors series)

Contracts in Counselling & Psychotherapy (Professional Skills for Counsellors series) From Sage Publications Ltd

I used this book in my Transactional Analysis course while doing an essay on Contracts. At first I didn’t think the topic itself would be that interesting but actually this book helped me think about just how important contracts and boundaries are. It’s well laid out and easy to read. I personally didn’t buy the book as I knew I wouldn’t be continuing with my studies at the time (I loaned it from library) but if I do continue with my studies in TA I would buy this book for reference.

The Mummy at the Dining Room Table: Eminent Therapists Reveal Their Most Unusual Cases

The Mummy at the Dining Room Table: Eminent Therapists Reveal Their Most Unusual Cases

A selection of true stories told by a variety of therapists. This book had me in stitches, disbelief and almost tears. It’s quite similar to ‘The Man Who Mistook His Wife For a Hat’ although in my opinion is a more interesting and personable read as it is less technical (by that I mean less ‘brain talk’!). The case that stands out for me is called ‘Every Parents Worst Nightmare’ and it tells the story of Monica who accidentally shot and killed her own daughter. The tenderness and understanding shown by the therapist and the courage of Monica moved me deeply and once again restored my faith in human kindness.

Psychodynamic Counselling in Action

Psychodynamic Counselling in Action

As quoted on Amazon by Professor Andrew Samuels, Centre for Psychoanalytic Studies, University of Essex:

“‘One of the most reliable (and readable) guides to what is involved in counselling that stems from the various psychoanalytic traditions. Jacobs’ well-organized and comprehensive summaries of the main theories and his illustrations of psychodynamic counselling drawn from his own work will inspire students and trainees on counselling and therapy courses. They will also interest (and create envy) in more experienced readers’”

. An excellent overview of psychodynamic counselling, providing clear descriptions and illustrations of concepts such as ‘transference’, the importance of time and boundaries and the ‘therapeutic relationship’.
